The 24th of September 2005 went down in Warsaw’s musical history as the day when one of the biggest and most besieged concerts in our country took place. The crowd at the entrance seemed to confirm this. Although Sting’s performance started at 9 pm, by 5 pm there were no seats left in front of the stage…
Punctually at 9pm, the preparations for the main star of the evening were over. Someone stepped onto the stage in the darkness, the crowd roared, the lights flashed… and it was clear – Sting was on stage! Before anyone knew what line-up he was in, the first chords of „Message In A Bottle”, the smash hit by The Police (the band Sting played with in the 70s and 80s), or to be more precise, their first song to top the UK charts, rang out. It all sounded surprisingly rocky and raw. Sting surprised everyone with the line-up he brought to Warsaw, especially the absence of keyboards and brass. Of course, Dominic Miller, Sting’s long-time guitarist, could not be missing. In addition, the stage had to be filled with drums, played by Josh Freese, a second guitar, wielded by Lyle Workman, and – undoubtedly – Sting’s bass and… that’s it – a truly rocking line-up, perhaps a little more expansive than that of The Police. So it’s no surprise that the next songs to be played at the Służewiec racecourse were from The Police’s repertoire: 'Demolition Man’, 'Spirits In A Material World’ and 'Synchronicity II’.
