The performance by Patrycja Dolowa and Pawel Passini premiered on 26 May 2016 at the Jewish Theatre in Warsaw. Pawel Passini’s performance zooms in on a dramatic moment from World War II when a biological mother, a Jewish ghetto woman, decides to say goodbye to her baby and give it to a second, Polish mother to raise. It is a painful and poignant moment when a woman has to kill the maternal instinct in herself so that her child can continue to live. What is most important in the play are the real human stories and those who survived – the now grown-up children of the Holocaust. They speak about themselves and their parents. Both those who raised them and those whose traces they are still searching for. Their moving testimony also makes us realise how much Polish women risked when they decided to take in Jewish children. The performance is an apotheosis of love and life, as well as an expression of gratitude. The solemn atmosphere is complemented by improvised live music.
